As the deputy chief of staff for President Richard Nixon, Alex Butterfield was closer to the president than most. When he was faced with a direct line of questioning, regarding the existence of White House tapes, Mr. Butterfield’s conscience and sense of loyalty to the country compelled him to disclose that these tapes did indeed exist. That revelation would eventually lead to President Nixon’s resignation from the presidency due to the Watergate Scandal.
